The case for the messy, multi-hyphenate career.

For a long time I tried to pick one lane. I would be a software engineer, or a penetration tester, or a teacher, or a founder. Each time I committed to one, the others would quietly make me better at it.

Teaching forces you to explain things without jargon. Security forces you to question assumptions. Engineering forces you to ship before you are ready. Founding a tiny product forces you to do all three while also invoicing people.

The downside is that your résumé looks like a LinkedIn mad lib. Interviewers occasionally say, “You have an interesting background,” in the same tone someone uses for abstract art they do not understand.

I have stopped apologising for it. The best work I do happens at the intersections — where secure design meets usable product, where teaching meets rigorous tooling, where building meets breaking. If your career is a straight line, you are probably not exploring enough.
